World O:250 Championship

Sturovo, Slovakia (22nd - 23rd September)

The World O:250 Championship is a one round event comprising of four races with the best three counting to the overall position. It is open to all drivers from around the world.

At the UIM O:250 World Championship held in Sturovo, Slovakia Wayne qualified in a disappointing 8th position as a result of as yet unexplained engine failures. In the first heat race Wayne put these problems behind him and made an excellent start and drove brilliantly to finish in third place. However is luck changed in the second heat race as a driver on his outside pushed him into the first turn buoy causing him to stop. He was lucky though not to be injured when the weight holding the buoy in place came out of the water and landed on the boat. For the third heat race Wayne was starting from the back of the grid because of his previous DNF, but was making his way through the pack when a bearing in the gearbox broke causing the gearbox to fail, ending has race. In the fourth and final heat race the engine gremlins returned and Wayne suffered engine failure. Wayne finished in 8th position (out of 16 starters) in the overall standings. The winner was Lembit Aaslav-Kaasik, with Rene Behncke second and Massimiliano Cremona third.

European F:250 Championship

The European F:250 Championship is a four round series for the 250cc Outboard Hydroplanes and is open to all European drivers. Round 1 is in Boretto, Italy (5th - 6th May), Round 2 is in Baja, Hungary (7th - 8th July), Round 3 is in Bitterfeld, Germany (11th - 12th August)and Round 4 is in Auronzo, Italy (25th - 26th August).

Round 1 - Baja, Hungary (7th - 8th July)
At the first round of the UIM F:250 European Championship held in Baja, Hungary Wayne qualified in 2nd position, with pole position going to Rene Behncke. In the first race Wayne made a good start and exited the first turn a very close second behind Behncke. These positions were maintained for the duration of the race, with Michal Kosut finishing third. The second race was similar to the first with Behncke taking the win, Wayne second but with third going to David Loukotka. However in the third heat race Wayne's engine bogged down at the start, he still managed to exit the first turn in second place but the chasing pack were much closer this time. Wayne was chased all race by Kosut and was eventually demoted to third place by the chequered flag, albeit by just 2 seconds. The win again went to Behncke. In the fourth and final race Wayne again had a third place finish, with the win going to Kosut and Loukotak second. This meant Wayne finished third overall, with Michal Kosut second and Rene Behncke taking the win.

Round 2 - Bitterfeld, Germany (11th - 12th August)
At the second round of the UIM F:250 European Championship held in Bitterfeld, Germany Wayne qualified in 2nd position, with pole position going to Rene Behncke. In race one Wayne made a good start and lead the race until the last lap when Behncke (who was recovering from a poor start) past him, but as he did so suffered engine failure and Wayne went onto take the win by a comfortable margin. Second palce went to Michal Kosut with Peter Bodor third. In the second race Wayne again got off to a good start lead the race for the first lap but was then passed by Behncke. Wayne was closely following Behncke until a couple of laps before the end of the race when as Wayne was lapping a backmarker he narrowly avoided being hit. The boat however took on a lot of water and the engine nearly got washed out, but Wayne managed to continue and finished the race in second place. The win went to Behncke with Kosut finishing third. In the third race Wayne again got a good start and lead the race from start to finish, with Kosut second and Peter Suk third. Wayne had scored enough points in the first three heat races to put him in an unbeatable position so he did not contest the fourth and final race. This is Wayne's first win at international level in the 250cc class and the first different winner of an O/F:250 World or European championship event for over three years (14 events). Michael Kosut took second place on the podium with Andreas Otto third.

Round 3 - Auronzo, Italy (25th - 26th August)
At the third round of the UIM F:250 European Championship held in Auronzo di Cadore, Italy Wayne had difficulties in finding a suitable engine setup in practice. This was due to the race venue being some 3,000 feet above sea level and the reduction in engine performance this causes. However the problems were solved for qualifying with Wayne posting the second quickest time, with pole position going to Rene Behncke. However Wayne's race starts were not as good as they could have been meaning he was down the order as he exited the first turn. Nevertheless he drove brilliantly to make his way through field as the races progressed, but was unable to catch Behncke so had to settle for second position in each of the races. This meant Wayne finished second overall, with the win going to Rene Behncke and third place going to Tunde Bedi. This result means that Wayne maintains his one point lead in the championship with one round remaining.

Round 4 - Boretto, Italy (8th - 9th September)

At the fourth round of the UIM F:250 European Championship held in Boretto, Italy Wayne qualified in a disappointing 5th position, with pole position going to Rene Behncke. In the first race Wayne was unable to gain any place at the start but moved up to third place as the race progressed, but was unable to catch second place man Lembit Aaslav-Kaasik before the chequered flag. The race win went to Behncke. In the second race Wayne did not get the best of starts and came home in fourth place. The win again went to Behncke, with Aaslav-Kaasik second and Massimiliano Cremona third. In the third race Wayne got a better start and finished the race in third place, with Aaslav-Kaasik second and Behncke again first. Wayne won the fourth and final race with Cremona second. However this race was not without problems for Wayne as he suffered damage to the gearbox casing and propeller caused by hitting debris in the water. The overall win went to Rene Behncke with Lembit Aaslav-Kaasik second and Wayne third. This result means Wayne finished in silver medal position in the championship, with Rene Behncke first and Michal Kosut third.
